NICARAGUA, Finca Bethania
This coffee comes from the Cafetos de Segovia micromill, a labour of love from the Albir family. Sisters Ana and Martha Albir, second generation of the family, inherited their passion for coffee from their father who originally bought the farm in 1991. Following political turmoil forced the family to leave the country and cease operations on the farm. In 2007, the sisters were able to take over the farm again. In 2015 they were able to invest in a mill and in 2016 their milling and exporting operation began under the name of Cafetos de Segovia, not only for their own farm but for another 11 neighbouring farms owned by family and friends.
This is a microlot coffee; microlot coffees are less common in Nicaragua despite the presence of good quality varieties such as bourbon and caturra. The sisters and their associates are interested in producing specialty coffee, and are going the extra mile to separate lots based on variety and a host of experimental processes such as Honeys and Naturals, unusual for Nicaraguan coffee.
