Irera factory was established in 1958, and has evolved to around 2250 individual members of the cooperative society, with 550 or so using Irera. The Cooperative is managed by an elected board of 5 members 2 of whom have been elected from Irera’s catchment. Currently the society has 11 permanent members of staff who are headed by a Secretary Manager. The Secretary Manager is the Chief Executive Officer overseeing the day to day running of the Coop under the supervision of the board.

The cooperative’s current production stands at 900,000 Kg of cherry with 350,00 of that through Irera. The coop is aiming to increase its yields to over 1,000,000 Kgs. Farmers selectively hand pick red ripe cherries that are delivered for wet milling the same day. These are mainly SL34 and SL28, though some Batian and Ruiru is found in the area.
